Information on Japanese Catch Certificate Scheme according to EU's IUU Regulation (No.1005/2008)

To whom it may concern.

The European Community (EC) formally adopted the Council Regulation (EC) No. 1005/2008 of 29 September 2008 establishing a Community system to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (hereafter, the IUU Regulation) . The Regulation has been effective from 1 January 2010.

In accordance with the IUU Regulation, Japan centralizes the power for validation and verification of catch certificate to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) for the time being, to appropriately operate and manage the scheme in a unified way.

The Fishery Product Trade Office of the Fisheries Agency is the only competent authority within Japanese government for issuance of catch certificates required for exportation of fishery products to Member States of the European Union (EU).
